You don't need to be an expert. Literally all you do is make sure they have easy access to food, water, clean litter, and a comfy place to rest. Occasionally play with them, pet/brush them.

It's the lowest commitment pet possible and the reward for them liking you in return, which is easy to achieve, is worth it.

If you stop seeing them as some nuisance to be shooed away you can start solving a lot of the "problems" you have with them.

Cats are extremely simple to care for. You don't even have to meet it's needs most of the time (your parents should be doing that), all you gotta do is ask if it's OK to pet it every once in a while and it basically becomes your best friend. If you're running into other issues with the cat then follow the troubleshooting steps in post 242.
