You shouldn't ever cite encyclopedia whether the wiki variety or the the Brittanicas.

You should always cite underlying research. Reliable encyclopedias are well sourced assemblies designed to give an overview, detailed or otherwise. They are not intended to be a replacement for research. Which is why they shouldn't be used in citations. You aren't citing a source by citing an encyclopedia. You are citing somebody else citing a source.

They are still useful in myriad other legitimate academic and educational contexts though.
