You're not entirely wrong but there's levels to it. A lot of people these days are so accustomed to social media inadvertently becoming their "third place" that random, unwarranted contact and interactions might still feel uncomfortable.

You just have to put yourself in their shoes. Them getting a random friend request or DM on IG might not be the weirdest thing ever but in the context you described they might feel uncomfortable that somebody saw them on a completely different platform and then went through the effort to find them on another platform, just so they could slide into their DMs. If I were a woman in that situation my mind would immediately start racing and entertain the idea that the person has the capacity to find me on other platforms, and that would make me uncomfortable.
