Trump described the attack as "another targeted attack on christians" which is pretty laughably off base. If anything the perpetrator was pro-christian and anti-mormon. Now it is true that nearly all mormon people self-identify as christian, the reverse does not hold true. Many christians do not include mormon people to be among their number. The guy who did this attack definitely seems to fall in the anti-mormon group of christians. My personal understanding is that there are enough fundamental differences that it would make sense to separate the two religions, but I would wager that mormons get a lot of mileage out of the association and being able to recruit people by saying "well we're basically Christians too".
