For story reasons I'd say recruiting other students is undesirable. Faculty less so. If you're done with the story and just doing it for gameplay, it's fine. But I still think it's more fun to recruit specifically instead of just taking every student you can get your grubby hands on.

Though, even in regards to gameplay, a full in-house playthrough can be a way to "challenge" yourself on how to best make use of a set of units where you might not feel good about some of them.
