Topic | [VGMC] Day 82! feat. Gathering the Ambivalent to Attack the Past |
Gall 08/06/25 6:17:44 PM #44: | No One Cares About the Letter L Auld Lang Syne Letter L is my second support in this retirement round. I didnt expect it would make it here, and there were multiple songs I was seriously concerned about betraying it for (like What a Mario World title) that ended up being non-issues. Instead, its final obstacle is FIGHT!!. And I hate FIGHT!!. Which is strange, because I like Noriyuki Iwadare, and I like battle themes. And its not like its even a bad song, or one that I hate listening to. Its just so uninteresting. Its the kind of song that gives a bad name to Iwadare and to battle themes, both of which are capable of sounding as hype as this while also having some more substance to them. I have voted for FIGHT!! once before, in R1 vs. Plague, which was a song I tried to give a chance but ended up finding too alienating. Which makes me wonder, if several-years-ago me was voting in this match, would I vote against Letter L? I dont think I would like FIGHT!! so much more than I do now, but I likely would have been more put off by Letter Ls erratic synths, and less open to recognizing the beautiful world they form. Im happy to be someone who has room in my heart for songs that are on both ends of the spectrum from FIGHT!! to Letter L, and I have VGMC to thank for helping broaden my horizons. Match 2 is good, not much to say about it. Yack is Yack. Auld Lang Syne has a little too much repetition in the middle (couldve cut out 4:41-6:41 but with how consistently good it sounds, I dont mind. Its kind of like an evolution of Last Battle -T260G-, with high-definition clanks and whirs of machinery, a smooth electronic rhythm, and for some reason vocals. Yeah, I dont get whats going on with this song thematically, its a future factory and New Years and also a final boss theme somehow? Well, everything in it sounds good, so who cares if it makes sense. --- Tune in to over a decade of VGM history with the VGMC playlists!
