I don't know if I should play any of the games or not, before watching the show. The show borrows elements from the games but is it's own entity. Only thing you'd miss out on is character names, specific item names, and when they very occasionally bust out select known popular themes during a fight. Symphony of the Night is always a good starting point as it's the origin for the game term "Metroidvania".
