to be fair Im not really sure how fun most of my list is. The wild robot and the iron giant are probably the most lighthearted of the bunch.

Persepolis - a coming of age story of a girl growing up in the aftermath of the Iranian revolution.

Funan - a woman searches for her son after they are separated in the khamer rouge revolution.

approved for adoption - the story of an orphan of the Korean War getting adopted by a western family and his struggles with growing up straddling the two cultures.

grave of the fireflies - a pair of siblings struggling to survive in the war ravaged Japan.

when the wind blows - an elderly English couple try to maintain a normal life in the aftermath of a nearby nuclear strike.

barefoot gen - a young Japanese boy tries his best to find a life in the aftermath of the nuclear bomb on Hiroshima. Extremely graphic depictions of the bomb.

The day of the crows - a near feral boy raised by his tyrant of a father in a haunted forest must leave the forest to find help for his father and meats a girl named Manon.

the breadwinner - a young girl living under taliban rule must disguise herself as a boy in order to provide for her family after her fathers arrest.

the iron giant - a boy living in Cold War America finds a giant killer robot with no interest in killing.

Ethel and ernest - a biography of two normal people meeting, falling in love, getting married, and growing old together set in London from the 1920s to 1970s

the wild robot - a displaced robot tries to find its purpose on an uninhabited island as it finds there is more to it than what it was programmed.
