The Iranian people tend to be more left than the regime itself. The best case scenario was them overthrowing the regime themselves but, well....

The regime has basically told the people that their loss of freedom, the brutal repression, economic hardship, etc. is worth it because the regime can protect them and...well, that's being disproved.
