Isnt the whole point of the right to own guns so that you can overthrow a tyrannical government/ruler? Because its clearly not worked out that way.

Yes, that was the original reasons our Founding Fathers wrote the second amendment. They had a massive distrust with ruling bodies, such as the monarchy, and expected us to constantly march down to the capital with Guns in arms when the government were to do things against the people's will. The reason that it won't ever happen, even if a government becomes tyrannical, because a government military will always be better equipped than whatever weapons we have on hand.

What unfortunately happened was that not only did it create a gun-worshipping culture, but also means billions of unregistered guns in circulation that helps create the high rate of mass shootings than any other first world country. Almost every other first world country has some common sense gun control (or hell full on ban) and while not perfect don't experience the same amount of gun violence we see in America.
