Third parties are important in the political landscape of the US but not as options in critical elections. Their ability to push policies that other ones won't is important. Voting for them in anything other than maybe local level elections is often deleterious to those critical races. As far as vote withholding goes I don't think it's effective as a method of protest since the main task voting does is harm reduction. I firmly believe no material change ever comes from electoral politics, but that there is a duty to engage in it for the purposes of previously mentioned harm reduction.
