Some of it was that Captain Marvel got a boost from being between Infinity War and Endgame. Some of it was due to the fact that The Marvels didn't get a lot of the normal press tour stuff because of the actors strike going on meaning that the cast literally weren't able to do that stuff until shortly before the film came out. The fact that people incorrectly assumed you had to have watched some of the shows in order to understand The Marvels was another aspect. The so called culture war stuff was also in place, as while both starred women, the second was an ensemble of three women, with two of them not being white. There's other factors as well, like films in general not doing as well post-COVID, the MCU fatigue that a lot of people feel, and I'm sure tons of other stuff.
