I thought Lucas struck a better middle ground on the EU. He allowed it to exist until something came out that contradicted it. Ex: There were a lot of EU stories set between Episodes 2 and 3 and they were canon at the time until The Clone Wars wiped them away. The way Disney handled it (it all is gone) was much more heavy handed, and just unnecessarily rubbed fans of the EU the wrong way for no reason.

Also, I disagree with your overall assessment of the Legends EU.
