Do a lot of high tier concert pianists go on to compose? I actually have no idea about this. I figured they just learn a shit ton of theory to make learning the harder stuff easier and more manageable at their skill level. But what do I know, there's like billions of etudes by Liszt and Beethoven and other big shots so that's technically composition.

Just curious here, not calling you out, just started learning piano half a year ago and I'm not really looking towards making compositions just learning theory to make it easier to grasp more piano concepts.
I'm very attracted to and fascinated by musicians and always ask similar questions. Different for each person, really. I found someone when I was doing the online dating scene who was composing scores for films. I asked her questions on what the process was like and she said she was classically trained, so that was where most of her influence was. But it's a lot of that theory being recalled. Of course, different directors will choose different composers depending on their needs and the artists portfolio. Music isn't really a one-size-fits-all medium. Everyone has their strengths and weaknesses and tastes.

But a lot of people really don't even need formal training. They just fuck around until they come up with something they like. And then they fuck around some more and come up with better things. If I had the ability, I'd certainly be that kind of musician.
