I think it definitely has something to do with that but also possibly cloning as a piece of it. I went back and doublechecked this - when Helly and Mark are showing their bellies to Gwendolyn Christie's goat herder, it doesn't look like Helly has a belly button? They make a point to show Mark's, but it doesn't even look like there might be one tucked under Helly's waistband.
