Actually, it's not an "of course" at all. The 3080 smoked the 2080 Ti at a lower price and the 4080 matched the 3090 Ti (albeit it was more expensive than the 3080 significantly at launch). 1080 was 30% faster than a 980 Ti.

There's a reason reviewers are pretty uniformly disappointed in the 5080 and that is because it is not showing the in-class generational improvement we typically expect. It's looking more like the 20 series, though the 20 series had the feature novelty of hardware ray tracing support, while the only advertised locked feature of the 50 series is multi-frame-gen, which reviewers aren't super happy with.
I'd guess it's because the AI tech probably isn't for gamers at all, but the frame gen is there to entice them on an otherwise minimal upgrade.
