There's a couple of Yakuza games where you spend money to level up, and it's a crazy amount of money too like tens of millions of yen on a game where you spend a couple hundred or thousand at a shop normally. It does not explain where this money goes or how it makes Kiryu stronger.

The funny thing is, they do have a discussion about how it works right at the start of the game; it just focuses on how to do it in the menu instead of what physically happens in-universe, lol.
