That's not what happened. After the 2012 loss, there were two camps in the GOP: Those (like IIRC Karl Rove) who blamed it on the GOP's failure to appeal to minorities, and those (like Newt Gingrich) who blamed the GOP for choosing candidates and policies that "were not sufficiently conservative." IIRC Ann Coulter was part of both bases.
The former camp actually did try to reach out to minorities after 2012. This resulted in significant backlash because reaching out to Muslims and gays alienated their core base and also pissed off the latter camp.
In the end, the GOP discovered that doubling down on bigotry and fearmongering worked far better than trying to make the party more inclusive. Then in 2016, Trump's election win validated the Gingrich types.
