The creator of Howard the Duck was angry for a long time that Marvel stole Howard from him.
He worked for Image Comic when he got a chance of making a Spider-Man / Howard teamup for Marvel. He also made a Savage the Dragon comic that takes place at the same time, and reading it reveals that Howard is taken from the Marvel universe to the Image universe where he goes into a witness protection program and change colors and name. Left in the Marvel universe is a clone from the Image universe.
Yeah, but even by the early 70s, anyone working for either Marvel or DC should have known that any characters they created while doing so belonged to the company, not them. It's not fair, but it's the work-for-hire model.
