If you like battle manga (db, Naruto, bleach, etc) you'll probably like one piece. I'd say it's more like dragon ball than the other series (goofy, funny, etc.). It is long, but honestly binging it/reading it at your own pace is better than waiting a week for it to come out. The week by week pacing can be a little painful if you're impatient. By that, I mean there are some weeks/chapters were nothing really gets resolved, but if you're binging the manga it really isn't a negative.

I say start reading it, but don't obsessively read it (unless you want to). The manga will be over soon enough so you can get caught up as the manga comes to an end.
