I tried playing the Atri visual novel, but after an hour I just wasn't feeling it. I was expecting something with a different vibe, I guess. I thought it might be another tearjerker robot VN like Planetarian, but it didn't have those vibes at all. It also could've focused more on deep sea diving aspect. I enjoyed If My Heart had Wings, a VN that focused on building airplanes and really got into the details of it. You could tell a story like that about diving too. Sadly, I got the distinct impression that he only dived to get Atri and they'd never go underwater again. The first hour was just the main dude going back and forth on whether or not he wanted to sell her. Atri herself barely seemed to care what choice he picked, too. She was just a bundle of generic waifu characteristics. I honestly found her more annoying than anything.

Despite that, I still decided to watch the anime. I doubt I'll like the story enough to go through it twice, so I picked the version that's five hours long instead of ten. The anime had quite a few differences from the VN in the first two episodes, but I suppose it's nothing major. I have mostly the same complaints. Atri is shallow waifu-bait, main dude is gloomy to the point of not being fun to watch, and I'm not really feeling the dynamic between them. Even the setting feels half-baked. For a world being slowly flooded, society hasn't broken down like I'd expect it to. He grabbed food from an abandoned supermarket and it was still well-stocked even with junk food like chips. Man, in a real apocalypse some warlord would've locked that place down so fast.

I'll stick with the anime. It's not like I'm hating Atri. It's just firmly in the bottom half of shows I'm watching this season. I expected to like it based on the premise, so I'm kind of sad it isn't working for me at all.
