I'm really glad JK Rowling went batshit crazy after writing Harry Potter.

Imagine Hermione going on with Ron about how men are invading women's spaces, and then learning Voldemort was trans all along.

Instead in the books we got a whole "don't mess with the institution of slavery" arc in the books.

If I had never seen any material outside of the books maybe I would have assumed the best, assumed that Hermione was supposed to be depicted as being "in the right" during the SPEW plot. But there's archived writing from Rowling's own website that describes SPEW as a 'Hermione meant well, but she was too interfering.' (paraphrasing a little here, but not much).

Also...when the London stage play came on, they cast a black woman as Hermione (which Rowling approved of, to her credit). But then Rowling insinuated something along the lines of "maybe I always intended Hermione to be black", yeah, that...didn't really make the SPEW scenes read any better. So...now we're supposed to read those scenes as the one black girl in the class is horrified by slavery, wants it stopped, and she's surrounded by white students and teachers telling her she's overreacting, "doesn't understand", telling her that this is better for the elves actually, and telling her to "drop it". Uhh....
