I'm sure if I had played all the others first, I'd say that it isn't a Mario game. Growing up in a time where I was able to play all three SMB games in order, SMB2 was always my favorite of the three, probably becasue of what you said, picking up and throwing enemies, as opposed to just jumping on them, along with the game moving horizontally AND vertically made it feel like such an advancement from SMB1 --- You gotta laugh.
