There are different kinds of therapy.

If you're talking about individual therapy, a big part of it is having someone you talk to while having assurance that what you say will remain confidential. It doesn't have to be a major mental health issue. It can be things like you want help dealing with stress or family relationships or whatever you want to get out of it. A good therapist is going to listen to you and find out what your goals are and try to help you with them.

They may offer suggestions for strategies that might help with whatever you're going through but they're not going to try to tell you that you have to do things a certain way. It's also pretty common for people to try a few different therapists before they find someone they click with. If you don't feel like a therapist you're seeing is really helping you it's totally fine to decide to see a different therapist.

There's also things like couples therapy and group therapy, but it sounds like you're not talking about those. There's not a one size fits all, it depends on you and what you want to get out of it.
