Idk how recent your experience is/how old those vets were, but a lot of hazing (unit initiation rites) and abuse in the military in history could be sexual (molestation, sexually charged verbal abuse, penetration with objects, or straight up sexual assault/rape) and it could be that as a result of being traumatized and feeling powerless, they took it out on someone who couldn't fight back against them.

None of it excuses any of their actions, mind you, but there's likely a common reasoning/experience tying that population together.

Though there is also just the common abuse of trust/position of power.

Could be a lot of things. The one who told me this was sexually abused as a kid but not in the military though he denies it. Everyone else in his family says it happened though.
