In fact, Across the Spider-Verse has it be a plot point that The Spider-Man comics also kept on a similar path with Peter Parker, with him gaining his "great power" by total accident, only for JMS's run to make Peter into a "chosen one" by introducing the concept of "spider-totems" to the series with the character of Ezekiel Sims, the totem-hunter Morlun, and having Peter die at Morlun's hand only to be reborn by a spider-god in The Other. Dan Slott's trilogy of Spider-Verse comic events then went further by introducing Morlun's family (the Inheritors), the Web of Life and Destiny, and the multiversal spider-totems' role of maintaining the Web (and with it, the entire Marvel Multiverse). ...
