Compared to boiling or steaming them, the downside is that it's harder to cook evenly. Also some vegetables might become tough if you microwave them--it's a good idea to look up "how to microwave ____" before microwaving a particular vegetable.

The upsides are that it's probably faster and it uses smaller, easier to clean dishes. Also compared to boiling them, it's healthier because you lose fewer nutrients.

I also remember reading people microwave potatoes.
It seemed weird to me too but it actually works really well. It's not much different from baking in the oven. Just make sure you poke a bunch of holes in the outside with a fork, otherwise it might explode.
