It refuses. If you're not explicitly running the companion app on the watch, it doesn't get notifications.
The Galaxy Watch never had this dumb fucking issue of having to have a companion app running just to fucking get notifications. On top of that, despite years of use, the Galaxy Watch4 does not have notably improved battery life over my old Galaxy Watch. It's a fucking joke. --- The name is wackyteen for a reason.
