People enjoyed them because they actually wanted to subject themselves to being horrified, offended and grossed out. To some people, being problematic was a positive selling point of the movie. Scary Movie, Date Movie, Epic Movie, American Pie and others - those had an audience despite being dumb and poorly rated. A little bit of both I guess.
