Haaaaaaard agree with this. I remember very little of it, but I do remember even teenage me, prime bait for edgy anime, rolling my eyes at the backstory where the bullies killed her dog.

That said, I've not seen a lot of fucked up anime. Higurashi maybe? Or Monster, though that's a lot more of a toned down and realistic fucked up. I remember one scene where Johan gets an orphaned kid to wander into the red light district to find his mother. He eventually finds a man about to fuck a prostitute on a garbage can. She tells him to stop because a kid is watching, but the man not only tells her to shut up, he demands the kid stay. Then he talks about how he's a well-respected school teacher while violently fucking her. He even has the disgusting audacity to tip the kid when he leaves.
