Yeah it's in North America but America on it's own is short for United States of America.

Not really in English.

Americas = the continent(s)
America = the United States

In Spanish, I'm aware it's a different story (though one of the Spanish terms for the US is "North American," so not like Spanish doesn't get sloppy, too).

Also, blaming America for stuff that happens outside of America is a pretty common internet joke.

America can actually refer to either.

America
geographical name
Amer i ca -mer--k -me-r-

1
either continent (North America or South America) of the western hemisphere
2
or the Americas -mer--kz

-me-r-
the lands of the western hemisphere including North, Central, and South America and the West Indies
3
UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

Of course, most people would refer to the US if they're not being pedantic lol.
