There were also certificates to present as their identified gender in public due to laws against crossdressing (it was called transvestite back then) and could obtain a name change (albeit chosen from a limited list.)

FYI, there's no such thing as "gender dysmorphia," it's called gender dysphoria. This is an important distinction because sometimes people conflate body dysmorphic disorder (sometimes called body dysmorphia informally) and gender dysphoria because the spelling is similar. BDD (body dysmorphic disorder) has nothing to do with being trans and is when a person has a delusional / warped perception of themselves, and which can be treated with psychotherapy. Misinformation about trans healthcare is unfortunately too common and harmful to the trans community.
