AFAIK you only get one unit of every type and you definitely have no reason, beyond personal ones, to not get more than one of the super relevant unit types. Like, you don't really need a second Lex running around but Cavalry are good enough that having a fifth Clive wouldn't be too shabby. You also get the advantage of being able to set their stats immediately, instead of using an expensive item, and many of the unique characters have kind of bad growth choices (though none bad enough that they actively harm you clearing stuff). --- "A shouted order to do something of dubious morality with an unpredictable outcome?
