Levels tend to give you about +5/6 (I don't remember the exact amount) of total stats spread out across the entire character, which means that you will largely do 1/2 more damage, take 0/1 less damage, etc. Not really a whole lot to write home about. By comparison there is an easily accessible (and nerfed from the demo) weapon that gives +15 Damage and +5 to all stats, which is basically the same as giving a character 10+ level ups just from the bonus stats alone (and the +15 Damage is not shabby on top of that). Levels matter a bit, definitely, but it is very much the same as Fire Emblem where it's more about the accrual of levels turning you into a juggernaut rather than any couple of them actually making you good.
