Topic | Soooo, what's the point of playing story games? |
Torgo 03/05/24 4:45:27 PM #11: | I feel the same way for the most part TC, I'm not that interested in following a traditional narrative story in a game. I'm more into game mechanics, stats, developing a character or party, exploring, etc...
No one talks about how restraining a game experience to tell a linear, detailed story from a very fixed protagonist POV - as the director and developer intends often makes me feel like I'm going through motions to tick boxes as story elements are revealed. In a more open ended game I feel like I'm really engaging with the software and pushing up against it. But I think it's fine that others like narrative heavy games. I came to terms with friends who liked sports games early on as a kid. Not that I hate sports, I just wasn't much into them and found sports video an extra layer of boring... but then I see how people might think the same thing about a deep, slow, turn based SRPG like XCom or Disgaea. --- Current signature not available. ...
