The concept itself comes from the weird sense of enclosure and repeating patterns in (usually) manmade areas. Say you're at a hotel, and it's just halls and doors throughout. Logically, you know there's a staircase or elevator somewhere that gets you to can exit. More immediately, though, all you can perceive is the same pattern of halls and doors that lead to other halls and doors. Merely having a pattern suggests repetition with no apparent limit.

It is probably relatable if you ever got lost in a hotel real late at night, and it turns out you were told your door was on the wrong floor. It is very disorienting.
