did he fail though?

Id say yesat least on a certain level. Yes, he made money, but I only ever hear people talk about The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, and sometimes Split with reference to his truly great titles. Even Signs, which feels like it was more hype at the time than anything else, sits at a 6.8 on IMDB. Above average on RT and comparable to his others, but The Sixth Sense is really his only standout hit there. Even Unbreakable and Split dont come close to the reception that one got.

The Village (arguable, I didnt enjoy it personally and thought the twist was glaringly obvious)
Lady in the Water
Thr Last Airbender
The Happening
Devil (this one is my guilty pleasure - I enjoyed it)
After Earth
The Visit
Glass
Old
Knock at the Cabin

All of these received generally average to below average or even super below average ratings. His issue is that, following on the trails of Sixth Sense, he spent a significant portion of his career just building movies around twist endings rather than building a compelling narrative that eventually lead to a twist. The reception to many of these feelings is, IMO, a direct response to twist fatigue audiences probably felt whenever they saw his name attached to something.

I guess failed is technically the wrong word here since he has obviously made a ton of honey in his careerI just hope his daughter does something different beyond just building her movies around (mostly) predictable twist endings.
