My wife's mainland Chinese mother was actually offended by how much some of them love Japan and we live in Japan (average people in Japan seem more critical of Japan than people in Taiwan). We occasionally got treated like shit for the obvious mainland accent only to get a hero's welcome once we revealed we live in Japan.
