We spend about $400 a week to feed ourselves (family of 4).

And we're already going to like 3 different stores. It's probably easy to min/max your grocery shopping when it's just you. But when you're working full time, raising a family, doing extracurriculars, planning meals, and dealing with specific diets/pickiness you just don't have time for that.

FYI not defending that idiot Tuck here, just sharing my particular experience with the wild consumer prices going on.
Yeah, I was by no means defending that fucker either.

I am a lifelong NYCer, but I grew up in a Taiwanese-Chinese household for 40+ years. So I know where to go for deals. My family drilled into my head never to pay more than 60% of 'suggested retail'. You just gotta be vigilant, and find the right stores, outdoor markets, fruit/veggie stands, etc. The internet has made it a lot easier the past 15 years. I do all of this, in order to compensate for the higher real estate prices we have to pay, though.

Btw, try places like Aldi and Lidl if you have one near you. Also try WinCO, MarketBasket if in the region:
I go to a WinCo near me. I hear you on the cultural background of thriftiness and I can relate. Have you spent any time in Taiwan? It's a beautiful country--I lived there for a while
