Where the Angel I grew up with purposely crashed a helicopter hoping to kill himself when his wings had to be amputated and he could no longer fly on his own.

Is this the main comic version? He did not plan to kill himself. If I remember right, Angel wanted to get into the air so he flew his private jet. However, the villain who orchestrated the amputation of his wings, sabotaged the plane to make it look like Angel committed suicide.
