How was it a critical step in the space race to kill a dog? Because they were the first ones to send a living thing into space. Maze_ posted... They did not learn a thing. That is not true. They were pretty sure it wasn't going to survive on the way back down but at the time they weren't sure it would even survive going up. They say they didn't learn enough to justify it, and that's a fair assessment but it wasn't like they learned nothing. The project was predominantly driven by dick measuring government psychos in the USSR at the time and not by researchers.
