FF8 came out at a weird time when the internet was still getting big. I think the junction system, isn't so bad for a first timer who tries to figure out things for themselves, but anyone going online to figure out strategies can pretty easily break the game. (and to be fair, some can break the game without going online, but you need to have a decent grasp of the system to do this)

Previous FFs have some pretty broken stuff that was balanced by how hard it was to figure out how to get (like FFVI's Ultima and FFVII's Knights of the Round). However, in the internet age, it's easier to figure out everything so these "balances" don't work the same way. (and also FF8 is worse than those two I mentioned, since you get those 2 late in the game, while 8 can be broken pretty early on)
