Pre-download the relevant language packs for the google translate app on your phone and its very unlikely that youll have any insurmountable language issues. As far as safety, it really depends where youre going and what youre scared of. Getting physically attacked? most of South East Asia is pretty low risk for that. Vietnam especially so.
