Employers already did background checks, but this is like hiring a private dick to spy on you to see if you'd be a good employee.
You know what, I was thinking about this and I wonder if some companies might be cutting corners on background checks with this. They can spy on your Facebook for free but real background checks cost money, I wouldn't be surprised if there were at least a few companies who thought Facebook spying was good enough.
