One side has something that the other side needs but which is not readily available, so they decide they can ask for whatever they want in the exchange, no matter how unreasonable. You're right that in a better job market this would be less of a problem, but I don't think that means it should be legal now.


Exactly, right. But you must realize that the problem in both of these cases is a bad economy. You cannot price gouge successfully in a balanced free market. The solution is to fix the economy, not to add even more regulations and plunge the economy into a deeper downward spiral just to fix a short-term, superficial symptom.
