Cobalt Thief absolutely fits Vriska. It's different to the stuff she normally gets, but that's exactly why it's so good, and it's why it's such a good fit. Vriska is a multifaceted character and this song fits the parts that pretty much none of her previous tracks covered. That's why it's one of my favourites.
Anyway, it's clear that they didn't have any appropriate high quality songs for the characters they wanted to portray. And frankly, if the changes fit, especially for the better, why shouldn't they make those changes?
Well then I'll just have to disagree on both counts! I don't think any of the songs were made any better by the change. There are some that don't fit very well at all and some that don't fit either character that much.
Going back to Indigo Thief, no it doesn't really fit Vriska at all because it seems too calm (also it uses morse code for Serenity that is so awesome). Compare Superego, which does a good job of conveying the concept of "troubled" Vriska while still being thematically tied to her. There's also Do You Remem8er Me, but I never really felt that as a Vriska-centric song since it also was John's and had callbacks to his songs.
Thing is, this isn't just a fan album, it's also designed to reflect certain themes by the creators, not just the fans. So obviously they need to make some changes to fit those themes. And I personally prefer it this way.
And yet...the fans are also creators. <_<
I'm not sure how involved Hussie is with the music team, but he generally doesn't use the albums as actual foreshadowing or literary tie-ins or whatever. It's usually the other way around, actually, as was the case with Cascade and Descend.
