It is, but like I stated, it's more like a visual novel with RPG elements than the other way around. If you dislike the combat system, you can always pick Caster and blow away enemies with skills instead of dealing with the system at all (you still might have to for the boss battles, though).

I remember your DQIV playthrough topic, but it purged before I could read through it. I was very curious as to what you thought of the characters and what foursome you used at the end (and I agree, Alena is great).
The topic is archived on... that site, if you know it. Just search my username and it'll come up.
Due to the loss of the party talk feature, I lost a lot of character development . I liked Alena, Ragnar, and Torneko the best of all the characters, but unfortunately I was underleveled for a great deal of the game so Kiryl took Torneko's place in the end. I rarely used any of the other characters.
