Yeah he lost to a guy who uses an Action Replay. Nothing he could have done and he actually put up a great fight compared to everyone else.
Only thing he COULD have done was use Charizard, but I think the writers almost "protected" Charizard by not involving him. They had to get the battle done in one episode, so Charizard would had to have lost pretty quick.
