I haven't really seen a gimmick like Jericho's before, this "progenitor" gimmick. It's game-changing in that it's somebody actively attacking what Punk's character has been about ever since he became this megastar. How his claim to be the "best in the world" is actually a bit short-sighted, given that he's never wrestled the original "best in the world".
This whole thing falls apart when you realize that the same phrase was used totally differently by Jericho. Punk's "best in the world" is something his character actually backs up by showing himself to be legitimately one of the very best there is. Jericho's "best in the world" was always the delusional ramblings of a guy who just wouldn't shut up even though he was never, EVER (to quote his old self) on that level or even close to it. Punk isn't ripping anything off - he's being what Jericho pretended he was because it was easier to say he was "the best in the world at what he does" than to acknowledge that he'd just gotten his ass kicked by an irrelevant mid carder for the third time that month.
