I'm sorry, I thought you were arguing about why government was GOOD! You're absolutely right though. It's an awfully large expense for something of no practical value. Meanwhile, people are starving to death and can't find jobs. It's a good thing we have government to take our money away, therefore preventing us from buying things of actual value to human beings, to use on completely useless "research."
It's not "useless" though, the information just can't be monetized in any immediately foreseeable way. Furthermore, a lot of the research that currently appears to be perfectly academic eventually becomes very useful. For example, without understanding quantum mechanics, transistors would never have been invented, and good luck making any modern electronic device without those.
